The Original format of Christian Prayers

Muslim students kneeling in prayer

Did you know that the early Christians used to pray five times a day ?

Did you know that their prayers involved kneeling and prostrating themselves to God in a similar fashion to the way Muslims pray?

Yes this is the same number of prayers that Muslims perform daily and there is also a similarity in the way prayers are performed.

Tertullian, the founder of Latin Christianity wrote:

But who would hesitate every day to prostrate himself before God, at least in the first prayer with which we enter on the daylight? At fasts, moreover, and Stations, no prayer should be made without kneeling, and the remaining customary marks of humility; for (then)89178917 i.e. at fasts and Stations. [Sabbath = Saturday, supra.] we are not only praying, but deprecating, and making satisfaction to God our Lord.89188918 For the meaning of “satisfaction” as used by the Fathers, see Hooker, Eccl. Pol. vi. 5. Touching times of prayer nothing at all has been prescribed, except clearly “to pray at every time and every place.
Sourcre: Tertullian – Of kneeling

He added:

in accordance (of course) with Israel’s discipline—we pray at least not less than thrice in the day, debtors as we are to Three—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: of course, in addition to our regular prayers which are due, without any admonition, on the entrance of light and of night.
Source: Tertullian- Of Time of Prayers

The last paragraph clearly describes a community that prays five times daily.

In fact, kneeling must have been prevalent amongst Christian worshippers, that the bishops gathering for the First Council of Nicaea thought it necessary to include an explicit prohibition in their declaration.

Here what God tells us in the Quran:

Therefor, bear with what they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst be well pleased. (Quran 20:130)

And, about Mary, God tells us in the Quran

And when the angels said: O Mary! Lo! Allah hath chosen thee and made thee pure, and hath preferred thee above the women of creation. (3:42)
O Mary! Be obedient to thy Lord, prostrate thyself and bow with those who bow (in worship). (Quran 3:43)

I see this as evidence that Islam is the preservation of the true religion of God as preached by all his messengers, unfortunately, our Christian brothers had their teachings eroded over the centuries by church officials and leaders.

  1. I am a Syrian Orthodox Christian. We kneel and touch our forehead to the ground in church during passion week and several times (100’s) on Good Friday.

Christianity is varied in approaches and service styles. Obviously no one is restricted from bowing to God.

I dont believe there are fixed formulas that one needs to follow.

  2. I am a practicing Greek Orthodox Christian; we still have a Strutured pray routine called the hours, split into 7 prayer times. 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm,6p m, 9pm, 12am.
These can be condensed into 3 per day
    Morning (6am,9am)
    Afternoon (12pm,3pm)
    Evening (6pm,9pm,12am)

We also prostrate during prayer several times. Also we Fast every day of Lent, also the period of advent, various holy days ; every Wednesday ; Friday.
Our women also wear headscarves during prayer at Church.

People think that the watered down Protestant version of Christianity is standard.

  3. Brother – you are attempting to show, like the Quran tells us, that Christians have lost their connection to God and their attempts at faith are misguided. However, your argument here fails. You infer that, because Christians do not pray in the manner of Muslims, “Church officials and leaders” have “watered down” God’s teachings.
First, let us examine your own teachings – nowhere in your Qur’an did God tell the prophet (pbuh) to pray five times a day. The number, therefore, is not a teaching of God and therefore if anything has been watered down, it is but a mere tradition of man.
Second, you fail to show at any point how Christians have lost their way. As my Orthodox brothers have already mentioned – Christians continue to prostrate and genuflect at prayer. Furthermore, while a good muslim may pray 5 times a day, similarly, a good Catholic prays three times a day as well as at every meal. Clergy pray 8 times a day. Does this make them “better” in the eyes of God? I would hope that God takes more than just “number of times prayed/day” into consideration.
My point is – your argument is moot. Yes, many muslims prostrate themselves when they pray. Many Christians genuflect. Some also prostrate themselves. This is not evidence of anything. Do not judge others – by how they pray or otherwise – that is for God alone to do.
God bless – la ilaha il-allah.

    • Dear Brother,

I am not arguing that, because Christians do not pray like Muslims, this is evidence of Church officials and leader watering down God’s message . This is not the message of this post at all. I am saying that the vast majority of Christians do not pray in the manner THEIR ancestors did, and yes, this shows that the message of Jesus has been eroded over the years.
The fact that some minorities within Christianity still preserve parts of the original format of their prayers which is similar to the way Muslims pray is further evidence that the religion of God is one.

Secondly, the tradition of the Prophet Mohamed and in particular, instructions on rituals are not mere words of a man, but rather the orders of God conveyed by his messenger. You will find that prophets often passed the orders of God to their people, (many examples can be found in the Torah to this effect)

  4. Being ‘taught’ in a Catholic school some ‘teachers’ had us pray 1 hour in the morning sometimes before and after 2 break times, before and after afternoon lunch and 1 hour kneeling on our chairs before going home. As a result I cannot kneel on any hard surface as my knees are damaged. What was called prayer was meaningless. It was repetition i.e. “Hail Mary full of grace….etc many times. “Our father who art in heaven” … many times, Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost amen. I never liked this although I did appreciate some of the Catholic teachings when they were teaching good moral standards and giving scriptural insight although this wasn’t all too regular. I didn’t like how the Catholic religion insisted that from the age of 7 years children had to have committed sins every week that had to be told to a priest to be forgiven. In my opinion young children should be discouraged from committing sin and being forced to have sins to confess was in my opinion not the way to achieve such a goal.

In my opinion prayer should not be repetitive but should come from your heart and if you earnestly pray with meaning for God’s direction you will receive direction. The bible is the true guide for anyone wishing to be a Christian which means being a follower of Jesus who studied and quoted scripture and refered to prophetic writings. Being guided correctly requires instruction from scripture. We need to understand God’s word not the word of any human and it is only scripture that can direct us in that effect with the help of God’s Holy Spirit.

      • It has been well over one year since you replied to my post as I wasn’t visiting this site but may I please inform you that I do not consider myself to be an erroneous student of scripture because I follow direction from my Almighty God who spoke directly to me many years ago and instructed me to search for knowledge and wisdom this I am doing. My God promised me I would be directed by His Holy Spirit and I believe I have received such a blessing however their is a price to pay for being loved by God and that price is solitude because those who are chosen by God are rejected by the world.

      • I do not deny the Dead Seas Scrolls and all that is written therein. These were found in 1947 purposely by the direction of my Sovereign God the year I was born and the scrolls give attestation to all I was told.

  5. It’s not supposed to be a contest between ‘religions’. First comes one messenger, then comes another messenger with an up-date, and this goes on, and it’s all kept in a Book and it’s not a contest between these books or these messengers or whose religion is better or more important or whatever ego trip you want to get on. It’s about studying, understanding and practicing the instructions in the books.

You don’t have to change religions, or choose which messenger is better. Instead of criticizing Christians all the time, perhaps it would be a better use of your time to actually sit down and read a bible. You can get a study bible that has been carefully annotated to show which lines of scripture were overlaid at which time. There are three overlays of text in the Bible. Scholars have verified which is which. It makes for very interesting study. You can also get a good lexicon and study the original Greek and see how the words have been mistranslated and why. The changes, called overlays or glosses, in the Bible are very consistent in promoting the supremacy of the tribe of Judah, and hiding the fact that the other tribes migrated away from Jerusalem very early in the narrative. One very good example of this is that the tribe of Judah is actually described as the ‘Lion’s Whelp’, not the ‘Lion’. The tribe of Benjamin is actually described as the ‘Lion’, not the ‘ravening wolf’. There are many other mistranslations that are designed to promote the Jews. But they are mistranslations, nothing more. It is our job to work together to uncover these things, not criticize each other’s ‘religions’ as if we weren’t all one.

    • I agree about translations and it is not what religion is superior Suzanne but even those calling themselves Christian are snarling at others who call themselves Christians. It is as I see it like Galatians 5:15 “If though you keep on biting and devouring one another look out that you do not get annihilated by one another. That is what I see happening today. The blood of Christ as I see it is being used as a financial commodity. There is one appointed leader the Son of YHWH, Yashua. Followers are, and were commissioned to be brothers and sisters on level standing sent to preach the Good News of God’s Kingdom and teach by example. I have seen and experienced so much bad example likened to the tribe of Judah before they were taken into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar.

People subjecting themselves to the three main religions Christianity, Judaism and the followers of the prophet Mohammad peace be to him are all waiting for the Kingdom to save mankind from annihilating itself. Having looked to see what is going on in this world we must ask ourselves just what is the set up.

As I see it most religions appear to be high jacked by profiteers and evil men taking up the name of God in an evil way. These do teach truth or some truth. They have to otherwise no one would listen to them. People believe these to be ministers of God and they demand full submission of people who listen to their pastoral supremacy.

Only they know the truth and the flock must get others into the fold because those who do not know what they know within their one out of many hundreds of thousands of ‘one true religions’ in opposition to all other ‘one true religions’ being in competition to see which is making the most financial gain which they invest in co operate hedge funds and other investments in this worlds Satanic devised systems whilst they also cause divisions by disfellowshipping and segregating people who do not submit totally in all they command inciting followers to hatred of others by their subliminal and insidiously devised ‘one true religion’.

If you hate Catholicism and see it for what it is I believe the hierarchy of most religions have controllers from Catholicism, radical Talmudic so called Judaism or Zionism and Freemasonry at the management level of most religions and they are working to envelop the whole world into a One World Order with a One World Religion but as I see it not without a massacre of many like the planned and devised WW1 and WW2 when it happened not to be the shepherd’s who forfeited their lives in the name of their ‘one true religion’ no, it was the flock who were instructed to follow Christ and become sacrificial lambs.

2nd Thessalonians 1:7;8 but, to you who suffer tribulation, relief along with us at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his powerful angels in a flaming fire as he brings vengeance upon those who do not know God and those who do not obey the good news about our Lord Jesus. These very ones will undergo the judicial punishment of everlasting destruction form before the Lord.

Some are misled and believe this refers to the Muslim belief but they have Muhammad as their prophet peace be unto him. The Muslim people obeyed their forefathers in not drinking alcohol. When the Israelite nation were being taken into captivity God instructed Jeremiah to offer the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab wine and they refused because they were obedient to their forefathers and Yahuaweh my Creator said Jeremiah 35:19 ‘For the reason that you have obeyed the commandment of Jehonadab your forefather and continue keeping all his commandments and doing according to all that he commanded you therefore this is what Yahuaweh of armies the God of Israel has said “There will not be cut off from Jonadab the son of Rechab a man to stand before me always”.

God asks us for obedience. We are not commissioned to interfere with others such as the descendants of Jonadab whose defenceless innocent ones are being slaughtered in their millions throughout the middle east in the name of democracy and no one is doing anything to stop this in fact many so called One True Christian organisations have probably invested much of their ‘tithes’ in funds they have collected to support this. Muslim rulers have complied in this horror also and are not free from condemnation.

Peter 3:10 Yahuaweh’s Day will come as a thief in which the heavens will pass away with a hissing noise, but the elements being intensely hot will be dissolved and earth and the works in it will be discovered.

2nd Thessalonians 2:3 Let no one seduce you in any manner, because it will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness gets revealed the son of destruction. He is set in opposition and lifts himself up over everyone who is called ‘god’ or an object of reverence, vs 8 Then indeed, the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Yashua will do away with vs 9-12 according to the operation of Satan with every powerful work with every lying sign and portents for those who are perishing as a retribution because they did not accept the love of the truth that they might be saved because they took pleasure in unrighteousness.

I agree we are living at a time when it is futile to be arguing over who is right ‘Let God be true though every man be proved a liar. The truth is for our Creator to reveal he loves all who have a good heart and all who love and none who have these attributes will perish regardless of religion. Those who are taking the lead will be more recompensible in the day of judgment if they do not operate according to these principles.

Thank you for your input I appreciate your view let us pray for the coming of the Kingdom of God and Peace on earth culminating in the removal from power all those who will be brought to ruin for their part in ruining the earth our Creator gave to us to cultivate and replenish. Rev 11:18.

      • I need to rectify the comment I made stating no one is doing anything about the slaughter of innocent defenceless Muslim people by scud missiles and other horrific arsenal there are many people putting much effort into addressing this injustice of great magnitude such as Ahmadinejad, Miko Peled; Norman Finklestein; Democracy and the Real Truth, and many others too numerous to mention. I pray that our Almighty Heavenly father takes action in defence of these brave people who are standing up for truth and in defence of the people subjected to death and other dire actualities even worse than instant death. May Allah; Yahuaweh; Jehovah; Yahweh the One God of Creation of different address according to understanding bring about the promised peace and justice to this world speedily. May that man of lawlessness be revealed along with unrepentant accomplices. Through the name of our Lord Yashua; Jesus and by the testimony of the prophet Mohammad peace be to him for all who love you and love those you have given instruction to in righteousness.
